In addition to a notable increase in citizen participation with respect to the popular consultation for the same purpose held on Sunday, April 10, 2022, this is stipulated by the Morena deputy, Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar, author of the initiative to modify the Constitution and make adjustments to article 35 so that the revocation of the president’s mandate Claudia Sheinbaum not in 2028 but a year before.
In the explanatory statement of the initiative, it warns that the approval of dates “will promote greater participation of citizens in the aforementioned instruments of direct democracy since, at the same time that they exercise their right to vote, they will be able to issue their decision regarding the direct consultation mechanisms.”
“It is convenient to remember that for the popular consultation held on August 1, 2021, only the installation of 57,077 receiving tables in the national territory was approved, with a participation of the equivalent of 7.11 percent of the people registered on the Nominal List of Voters,” he adds.
It should be noted that for the revocation of the 2022 mandate, the National Electoral Institute (INE) It only installed 57,448 polling stations in the 300 electoral districts of the national territory; This exercise had a participation of 17.77 percent of the electorate.
By 2027, the INE could approve the installation of 170,858 polling stations and have a participation of 61 percent of voters, similar data to that of the 2024 federal electoral process.
Finally, the initiative states that “it will facilitate the tasks and activities of the National Electoral Institute, since instead of having two or more calendars, in which the deadlines can overlap, it will only have one calendar for the execution of its functions.”
