The imposition of 107% trade tariffs on Italian pasta could soon result in many popular brands disappearing from U.S. supermarket shelves. This measure combines an existing 15% tariff on EU goods with an additional 92% penalty resulting from a US trade case. This lawsuit accuses Italian manufacturers of selling their products below fair market value in the United States.
As part of a recent anti-dumping investigation, the US Department of Commerce found that two major producers, La Molisana and Pasta Garofalo, were selling their pasta at prices below market value in the US. Both companies failed to provide complete documentation during the review, resulting in a provisional anti-dumping levy of 91.74% on their products.
This high tax also affects eleven other Italian brands, including well-known names such as Barilla and Rummo. A total of 13 brands are affected, which makes the import of Italian pasta varieties such as spaghetti, rigatoni and fusilli significantly more expensive. Giuseppe Ferro, CEO of La Molisana, emphasized the importance of the US market for his company, which he bought out of bankruptcy in 2011 and turned into one of Italy’s most successful pasta manufacturers.
The decision affects pasta sold between July 2023 and June 2024. The impact on the market could be significant as the US is a major market for Italian pasta. Experts warn of possible price increases and product shortages, which could pose challenges for U.S. consumers.
