International newspapers covered the intertwined dimensions of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip and its political and humanitarian repercussions, in addition to the expanding circle of settler attacks in the occupied West Bank, as well as the collapse of what they called “the justice system within Israel.”

In the Israeli newspaper “Yedioth Ahronoth”, an article concluded that the leaks of the torture of Palestinians in the “Sde Teman” detention center had caused the Israeli judiciary to enter a state of unprecedented chaos, and had strengthened the efforts of Justice Minister Yariv Levin to weaken judicial oversight.

The newspaper pointed out that the current crisis may represent one of the most important tests of the judicial system since the founding of Israel.

The American Wall Street Journal said that the decision of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) to return the remains of Israeli officer Hadar Golden surprised Tel Aviv, considering it an indication of the movement’s desire to adhere to the ceasefire agreement.

The newspaper quoted former negotiators in the Gilad Shalit deal as saying that Hamas is making efforts to find the remains of other detainees.

The French website “Media Part” attacked what it described as the “failure” of the world’s governments to curb the Israeli aggression, considering that the Palestinians are facing “systematic ethnic cleansing” in light of “shameful Arab and Western silence,” and criticized the transformation of Western recognition of the Palestinian state into “an empty slogan without substance.”

In its editorial, the Israeli newspaper “Haaretz” accused the Chief of Staff and the Commander of the Central Region of “betrayal of trust” for failing to protect the Palestinians from settler attacks in the West Bank, stressing that the army was standing by as a spectator to what it described as “organized Jewish terrorism.”

In an article in the French magazine Le Point, a former French ambassador warned that the West Bank was out of control, calling on Europe to take a more resolute stance towards settler violence. He also pointed out that the peace equation was collapsing, at a time when there was no real European will to change reality.
