The American delegate to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, called on the UN Security Council to support efforts to ease sanctions imposed on Syria and on members of the Syrian leadership, while the representatives of France, China, Russia, Pakistan, Turkey and Algeria stressed the protection of Syrian sovereignty.
Waltz said – during a speech he delivered before the Security Council, which met to discuss developments in Syria on Wednesday – that his country “welcomes the steps taken by Syria to strengthen its relations with neighboring countries.”
The American delegate considered that these moves come in response to the decision of President Donald Trump, who last July signed an executive order to end the sanctions imposed on Damascus since 2011.
He added that easing sanctions would contribute to improving the living conditions of the Syrian people, calling on the Council to support United Nations efforts in this direction, including lifting sanctions on some Syrian figures in accordance with UN Resolution No. 1267.

Waltz also praised the initiatives of countries in the region, such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and Jordan, to support Syrian institutions and strengthen the national economy, stressing Washington’s continued support for efforts to rebuild Syrian regional relations.
For his part, French delegate Jerome Bonafo urged Israel to end its military activity in Syrian territory and withdraw from it, indicating a rapprochement between Damascus and Beirut, and expressed his country’s readiness to support cross-border cooperation.
As for the Russian delegate, he stressed – during the Security Council session on the situation in Syria – that the Syrian people are the only body authorized to decide their fate, accusing Israel of seeking to establish an illegal buffer zone.
In turn, the Chinese delegate called for an end to Israeli military operations and immediate withdrawal from Syrian territory, calling for accelerating humanitarian aid to achieve economic recovery.

Syria’s representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, considered that the return of a million refugees to the country after the overthrow of the previous regime represented a “message of confidence” in the policies of the new government.
Olabi stressed that Syria has become present and active in the international scene, and provides, for the first time in decades, a real opportunity for political participation through the recent elections.
The Syrian news agency SANA quoted the Russian delegate as emphasizing Syria’s need for multifaceted international support, while the Chinese delegate stressed the need to restore peace and calm, calling for strengthening humanitarian aid.
The British delegate also expressed his country’s support for the Syrian government in the transitional phase, calling for collective thinking about additional steps to support Syria’s stability.
For his part, the representative of Algeria, Ammar Ben Jama, condemned the Israeli military operations, stressing that the occupied Syrian Golan is an integral part of Syrian territory, demanding an end to the attacks and complete withdrawal.
The Turkish delegate also stressed the need to support efforts aimed at preserving the unity and integrity of Syrian territory, and demanded Israel’s withdrawal from Syrian territory, while the Pakistani delegate condemned the Israeli incursions, considering that they undermine efforts at regional and international stability, according to what was reported by SANA.
Although the new Syrian government, which was formed in December 2024, did not initiate any threat towards Israel, Israeli forces continued their military operations inside Syrian territory, resulting in civilian casualties and the destruction of military sites.
Israel has continued to occupy most of the Golan Heights since 1967, and has expanded its control following the overthrow of ousted President Bashar al-Assad in late 2024.
