The world of sports is known for its constant innovation, especially when it comes to the health and safety of athletes. A notable example of this is the recent development of a Durham startup that developed a 3D printed splint for quarterback Daniel Jones. Jones, who currently plays for the Indianapolis Colts, recently suffered a fractured fibula, an injury that could normally be season-ending for a player.

But thanks to the efforts of Protect3D, a company founded by Jones’ former college teammates, the quarterback was able to continue his season. The splint, designed specifically for Jones’ left shin, provides protection from direct blows and allows him to continue playing at a high level. This technology is based on an innovative approach that uses an iPhone app to scan the injured body part and convert the anatomical data into a digital design for the splint.

Protect3D was founded in 2020 by Kevin Gehsmann, a former Duke University linebacker. The company specializes in producing custom, 3D printed splints used in various sports leagues and colleges. The ability to scan, print and deliver a splint within 48 hours is a key advantage that allows athletes to return to the field quickly.

Protect3D’s technology has great potential not only in sports, but also in medicine. The company plans to offer its products in orthopedic clinics to reach a broader target group. With recent $1.7 million in venture capital funding and a $1.3 million grant from the Department of War to explore applications in military environments, Protect3D is well on its way to further disseminating its innovative technology.
