The Indian space agency ISRO is preparing to launch a new communications satellite designed specifically for the needs of the Indian Navy. The satellite, known as CMS-03 or GSAT-7R, will be launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Center using the powerful LVM3 rocket. The start is planned for early Sunday morning and will be broadcast live.
The CMS-03 satellite is the heaviest communications satellite ever launched into geostationary transfer orbit from Indian soil. Weighing 4,400 kilograms, it will be placed into orbit approximately 16 minutes after launch. This geostationary orbit allows the satellite to hover continuously over a fixed point on Earth, which is beneficial for communications and spy satellites.
The new satellite will play a crucial role in enhancing the Indian Navy’s communications capabilities. It replaces the GSAT-7, launched in 2013, and offers expanded, secure multi-band communications capabilities. These are critical to the Navy’s expanding operations at sea and strategic command and control communications.
The LVM3 rocket used for the launch is India’s most powerful launch vehicle. It has already completed several successful missions, including the launch of the Chandrayaan-3 mission to the Moon in July 2023. At a height of 43.5 meters, LVM3 can carry up to 8,000 kilograms into low Earth orbit, underscoring its importance to Indian space travel.
