The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) recently received a significant donation of 500 million won from the Imdang Scholarship & Cultural Foundation. This financial support is an important step towards modernizing the space research facilities at the renowned university. The foundation, which is advised by Hyun Jeong-eun, chairwoman of the Hyundai Group, aims to significantly promote scientific research in Korea.

The donation will be used in particular to upgrade the “Chung Mong-hun Uribyeol Laboratory” on KAIST’s main campus in Daejeon. Plans include installing an elevator and renovating the exhibition hall with advanced digital displays that will showcase KAIST’s achievements and history of space research. These measures are intended not only to improve research capacity, but also to stimulate the interest of young talent in space technology.

The Chung Mong-hun Uribyeol Research Building, founded in 1997 with funds from the late Hyundai chairman Chung Mong-hun, is considered the first university institution in Korea dedicated to space research. Since its inception, the KAIST Satellite Technology Research Center, located in this building, has become a globally recognized center for small and microsatellite technologies. It developed Korea’s first satellite, Wooribyeol-1, and is a leader in the development of small satellites and ultra-small satellite constellations.

Hyun Jeong-eun emphasized that her late husband’s support for KAIST’s satellite technology research was driven by a deep passion for science and space travel. She hopes that the modernization of research facilities will help further advance Korea’s space technology and inspire more young talents to pursue their dreams in this field.
