Hundreds of people participated in a demonstration held on Saturday evening in the Austrian capital, Vienna, under the slogan “For peace, neutrality, and a sovereign Austria,” expressing their protest against their government’s support for Israel.
The demonstrators gathered in Vienna’s Christian Broda Square, at the invitation of civil society organizations, accusing the Austrian government of abandoning the principle of neutrality. They expressed their protest against the Austrian government’s continued sending of weapons to countries witnessing conflicts, and its support for Israel, which is committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza.
The participants chanted slogans calling for peace and freedom for Palestine, raising banners bearing phrases such as “For our peace and neutrality” and “Free Palestine from the river to the sea.”
In his speech at the demonstration, Lobosch Blaha, a member of the European Parliament from Slovakia, criticized the European Union’s arms race, denouncing the duplicity in dealing with the events in Ukraine and Gaza.
He said, “We impose sanctions on Russia, but the European Union turns a blind eye to the genocide in Gaza, and this is the real crime. This is considered a war crime.”
The European Parliamentarian described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – wanted by the International Criminal Court – as a war monster and a war criminal, stressing that the European Union and the United States are complicit in the annihilation of Gaza.
Since October 8, 2023, for two years, Israel has committed genocide in Gaza with American support, leaving 68,116 martyrs, 170,200 wounded, most of them children and women, and a famine that claimed the lives of 463 Palestinians, including 157 children.
On October 9, Hamas and Israel reached a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement, based on a plan proposed by US President Donald Trump, and the next day the first phase of the agreement entered into force.
