The way people perceive time can have a profound impact on their mental health. A recent study has shown that both an individual’s time perspective and chronotype are linked to depressive symptoms. People who focus more on the past or feel like they have no control over their lives are more likely to report depression. Likewise, evening people are more prone to mood swings than morning people.

Professor Konrad S. Jankowski from the University of Warsaw has suggested in his research that a person’s perspective on time could influence their chronotype. For example, future-oriented people may be more motivated to wake up early to pursue their long-term goals. This interaction between time perception and sleep patterns could be a key to improving emotional health.

The study, which included 343 adults, used the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory to measure time perspective and the Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire to determine chronotype. The results showed that people with a negative view of the past or an unclear future orientation had higher depression scores. Interestingly, chronotype was a mediating factor between time perspective and depression, particularly among people who were future-oriented and positive about the past.

These findings could help develop new strategies to support mental health by integrating both psychological and behavioral components. Future research could examine how specific sleep habits, such as bedtime consistency or use of electronic devices, influence the connection between time perspective and mood.
