A man was killed in Brazil after he was attacked by a lioness inside her enclosure at the Arruda Camara Zoo in the coastal city of João Pessoa, after he managed to bypass the barriers and enter the lions’ territory, according to what local officials reported on Sunday.

Clips spread on social media showed the man climbing a fence over a wall about six meters high, before descending through a tree into the enclosure, where the lioness was resting next to a pool of water.

As soon as he entered the area, the lioness noticed him and quickly attacked him. He tried to escape towards an area full of trees before he fell to the ground as a result of her attack.

In a statement, the zoo, known as “Pica,” announced the closure of its facilities until the investigation is completed, noting that “the incident is very unfortunate,” and offered its condolences to the family of the man, whose identity has not yet been revealed.

Emergency services, including military police, responded and rushed to the scene, but the man died at the scene. The zoo has closed its doors, while the authorities, including the Forensic Medicine Institute in Paraiba, continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
