ATHENS / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Greece is positioning itself as a central hub for the import of liquefied natural gas from the USA to Europe. This comes against the backdrop of the EU’s efforts to become independent of Russian natural gas by 2027. Greece has set itself the ambitious goal of playing a central role in Europe’s energy supply by acting as the main hub for importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US. This strategy is part of the European Union’s efforts to become independent of Russian natural gas by the end of 2027. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined the importance of this initiative at the international energy conference “Partnership for Transatlantic Energy Cooperation” in Athens.
The US is showing great interest in this development, as evidenced by the participation of high-ranking US officials such as Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum in the conference. Wright stressed that Europe can no longer rely on Russian gas supplies and highlighted Greece’s strategic role in the changing energy landscape.
A central aspect of this strategy is the so-called “vertical corridor,” an extensive pipeline network connecting Greece with several southeastern European countries. This network makes it possible to distribute LPG in large quantities through Greek ports. In the future, even more gas from non-Russian sources is expected to flow north via this route, with supplies from the USA playing a key role.
Geopolitical tensions, particularly Turkey’s role as a transit country for Russian gas, pose a challenge. Mitsotakis stressed the need to fully enforce the ban on Russian gas in order to shape the energy infrastructure without geopolitical conflicts. He called on the US and European partners to reconsider imports via Turkey to ensure the effectiveness of the measures.
