Google has announced that it will expand its popular mapping application Google Maps in India with the artificial intelligence Gemini. This integration is intended to make the app not only more effective, but also more secure. Already launched in the US, AI provides additional safety alerts and detailed route information, which is particularly important in a country like India with its diverse traffic conditions.

A key element of the new features is hands-free assistance, allowing users to focus on the road while receiving contextual suggestions for places of interest. Miriam Daniel, Vice President and Head of Google Maps, emphasized the importance of localization, which is crucial to the success of this integration. In India, this means understanding the way people ask for routes, identify places and take into account the different languages.

The launch of Gemini on Google Maps will be available for both Android and iOS users in India in the coming weeks. Initially, the AI will support nine Indian languages. Another highlight is working with local authorities to provide audio and video warnings about accident-prone areas. This feature will soon be available to Android users in cities like Gurugram, Cyberabad region of Hyderabad, Faridabad and Chandigarh.

The need for such improvements became particularly clear after Google Maps faced criticism in India when three men died in Uttar Pradesh last year when their vehicle fell off an unfinished bridge. Anal Ghosh, Senior Program Manager for Google Maps, emphasized that real-world situations can change constantly and advised drivers not to rely solely on Google Maps but also to keep an eye on the road.

In addition to safety features, Google Maps works with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to notify users about road construction work, near real-time updated information about highways and repairs. Information about various amenities such as public toilets, restaurants and gas stations is also provided. This feature is rolling out to Android users in cities like New Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai.

Another useful feature is the display of speed limits while navigating. This feature is available for Android and iOS users in nine cities including Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Hyderabad (including Cyberabad region), Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Noida.
