Germany has joined forces with a broad coalition of countries to call for more ambitious climate targets at the World Climate Conference in Belém. An urgent letter to the Brazilian conference leadership calls for a clear roadmap to move away from fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider emphasized the need for concrete progress in climate protection and described the upcoming negotiations as challenging.
Environmentalists are also raising concerns about the results of the conference so far. Martin Kaiser, head of Greenpeace Germany, emphasized the urgency of fundamental decisions to stop deforestation worldwide. The incendiary letter was signed by Germany, France, Great Britain, Spain, Colombia, Chile, Kenya and several small island states threatened by rising sea levels. They demand improvements to the draft texts and emphasize that the current draft does not meet the minimum requirements. Colombia plans to meet in April to discuss concrete steps. The alliance emphasizes that the legacy of the conference depends on the quality of the results, not the speed.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on negotiators to be courageous and follow scientific evidence. Viviane Raddatz from WWF praised the work of the Brazilian presidency so far, but emphasized the need for improvements to the current draft text. Christoph Bals from Germanwatch expressed the hope that there is still enough time to forge alliances and improve the minimum consensus.
