BERLIN / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – In a significant step towards digitalization, Germany has replaced the traditional paper vehicle license with a smartphone app. The new i-Kfz app enables drivers to manage their vehicle documents digitally and show them during traffic checks. This innovation is intended not only to make everyday life easier, but also to promote the digitalization of government processes.

The digitalization of vehicle registration documents in Germany marks a significant step in the modernization of government processes. The introduction of the i-Kfz app enables drivers to save their vehicle documents digitally on their smartphone and show them when necessary. Many people see this development as making everyday life easier, as it eliminates the hassle of searching for paper documents.
The app, which was presented by Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder and Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger in collaboration with the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), is an important component in the long-overdue digitization of state services. The ADAC praises the introduction as a noticeable relief for drivers, while the police welcome the quicker availability of documents.
Technically speaking, the app works by identifying users via their ID card with an online function or alternatively via a QR code when registering the vehicle. The digital vehicle registration document is saved locally on the device and checked to ensure it is up to date every time the app is started. The option to share the digital vehicle registration document with other drivers of the vehicle is also practical.
However, the police union also sees challenges. There is currently a lack of uniform nationwide standards and training for digital testing and documentation. There are also concerns about security, as hacked apps or counterfeits could pose a risk.
The digitization of the vehicle registration document is part of a larger plan that also includes the introduction of a digital driving license. This should also come to smartphones at the end of next year, which would make the requirement to carry a driving license card obsolete in Germany. The app will also be expanded into a digital wallet in which other important documents such as ID cards and health cards can also be stored.
