The USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group has arrived in the Caribbean to strengthen security in the region and combat transnational criminal organizations. This operation comes within the framework of instructions from the US President and the Department of Defense aimed at disrupting drug trafficking and ensuring stability in the Western Hemisphere.

Admiral Alvin Holsey, commander of US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), emphasized the importance of this mission to ensure the security of the region. The carrier group is supported by the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group and a Marine expeditionary unit already deployed in the Caribbean. These forces form the Joint Task Force Southern Spear, which aims to dismantle criminal networks that exploit shared borders and maritime areas.

Equipped with over 4,000 Sailors and numerous tactical aircraft, the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group provides force commanders with increased capacity to demonstrate force through sustained operations at sea. The carrier group also includes the nine embarked squadrons of Carrier Air Wing Eight as well as the guided-missile destroyers USS Bainbridge and USS Mahan.

This mission is part of Operation Southern Spear, which aims to enhance maritime domain awareness, support regional stability, and prevent illegal activities that could threaten U.S. security. The carrier group’s arrival in the Caribbean follows a series of operations in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, during which the group took part in NATO exercises and visited ports in several European countries.
