In France, two cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) have been confirmed in people who recently returned from abroad. French Health Minister Stéphanie Rist announced that the infections were detected after the patients returned from a trip to the Arabian Peninsula. Both patients exhibited symptoms consistent with MERS-CoV and are currently hospitalized in stable condition.
To prevent the spread of the virus, the French Ministry of Health took immediate containment measures. This includes contact tracing, testing and isolating people who may have come into contact with those infected. No secondary transmissions have been detected in France so far, but other travelers who took part in the same trip continue to be monitored.
MERS-CoV is a respiratory virus first identified in 2012 and is primarily associated with camel transmission in the Arabian Peninsula. Person-to-person transmission is possible, particularly in health care settings, but sustained community transmission is rare. The virus can cause severe respiratory illnesses, often accompanied by fever, cough and difficulty breathing.
The World Health Organization notes that MERS has a high mortality rate compared to other coronaviruses, with about a third of confirmed patients dying from the infection. Large outbreaks outside the Middle East are rare but significant. In 2015, South Korea experienced a large hospital-associated outbreak linked to a traveler from the region, resulting in 186 cases and dozens of deaths.
