In a case that has captivated both the space community and the public, Summer Worden, a former Air Force reconnaissance officer, has admitted lying to authorities about an alleged crime in space. She claimed that her then-wife, NASA astronaut Anna McClain, illegally accessed her bank account during a mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

The allegations led to an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission and NASA’s inspector general. Worden claimed McClain guessed the password and accessed the account in January 2019, while they were still married. However, the investigation revealed that Worden had given McClain access to her banking information since 2015.

The allegations came at a time when the couple was in the midst of a difficult separation and custody battle. The divorce was finally finalized in January 2020. McClain, who was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 2013, returned to the ISS in March 2025 as commander of the SpaceX Crew-10 mission.

Worden now faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Her guilty plea ends a bitter legal battle with McClain. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 12, and Worden will remain free on bail until then.
