BERLIN / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – The planned reallocation of the federal government’s transport budget is causing criticism from the Greens. Instead of investing in maintaining the existing transport infrastructure, more money should flow into building new roads. This could lead to delays in the renovation of highways and put a strain on commuters and the economy.

The federal government’s decision to reallocate the transport budget in favor of building new roads has met with strong criticism from the Greens. The Green Party’s housekeeper, Paula Piechotta, expressed her concerns to the German Press Agency that the planned savings in the renovation of motorways and federal highways could jeopardize the basis for economic success. She emphasized that a functioning transport infrastructure is essential to avoid expensive and time-consuming detours for commuters and the economy.

The Federal Ministry of Transport is confronted with billions in financial gaps for new and expansion projects on motorways. These gaps could lead to delays in the implementation of projects in the coming years. In order to address this problem, the leaders of the black-red coalition have agreed that projects that are ready for construction should be implemented and that more money will be made available for this. This decision is now reflected in the changes to the government’s draft budget for 2026.

According to the Ministry of Finance’s submission to the adjustment meeting, changes to the government draft are planned in various places in the transport budget. 225 million euros more are to be made available for the new construction and expansion of federal roads, while 450 million euros less are earmarked for maintenance. The previously binding minimum amount of maintenance funds for investments by Autobahn GmbH has been deleted, which the Greens see as problematic.

Another point of criticism from the Greens is that no additional budget is earmarked for the expansion and construction of the rail system, even though the rail network is overloaded in many places and cannot accommodate additional trains. This is seen as further evidence of an anti-business and backward-looking policy. The Greens are calling for a stronger focus on maintaining the existing infrastructure in order to ensure long-term economic success.
