BERLIN / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Flix is planning a massive investment in German rail transport by introducing 65 high-speed trains to create an alternative long-distance transport network. This strategic decision could intensify competition with Deutsche Bahn and permanently change the market. The first trains are scheduled to go into operation from 2028, while Flixtrain wants to expand its offering before then.

Flix has decided to conquer the German market with a significant investment in high-speed trains. The company plans to deploy 65 new trains to build an alternative long-distance transport network alongside Deutsche Bahn’s existing ICE system. This decision comes at a time when German rail transport is being politically reorganized and could significantly increase competition.
The federal government has signaled that it will promote competition in rail transport through lower route prices. Flix sees this as an opportunity to use the German market as a basis for further growth. The investment of up to 2.4 billion euros includes trains from Talgo and locomotives from Siemens. Unlike in the bus business, Flix assumes the full operational risk here, which means a longer time to profitability.
Deutsche Bahn currently dominates long-distance transport with over 400 ICE trains, which are to be expanded to 450 by 2030. Technically, the railway is superior because its trains can reach higher speeds. However, Flixtrain plans to create additional demand with a simpler product and cheaper prices rather than poaching existing rail passengers.
A possible market entry by the Italian state-owned company Ferrovie dello Stato could further intensify competition. The company is considering entering Germany with up to 50 express trains. In other countries it is apparent that high-speed markets usually only support two providers on a long-term basis. However, Flix remains optimistic and points to its already established position in the market.
