For almost a quarter of a century, María has made the property she inherited into Almoloya de Juárez the center of your life and the refuge of your children. However, the place he painstakingly built has become the scene of a bitter dispute.
For thirteen years, she says, she has been a victim of threats, insults and physical attacks by her half-brothers, who first stripped her mother of the house where she lived all her life and now target her.
The woman claims that the conflicts intensified when one of her attackers stole the sales document that legally supported the property, leaving her practically defenseless against demands for abandonment.
“They want to take us out by force. They have beaten my son, humiliated my mother and they tell me that the house is theirs when they don’t even have a piece of paper. I have receipts, I have up-to-date payments. We have always lived here,” he says through tears.
Institutional helplessness aggravates the family’s fear. Although she has filed complaints, the investigation has not progressed and the woman fears that the dispossession materializes without there being a serious review of the case. Neighbors who have known her for decades support her fight.
“It’s not fair. She has raised her children here, she has never caused problems and now they want to take everything from her. The authority cannot continue ignoring this situation,” claims Don Rubén, a resident of the neighborhood.
María reiterates that she does not seek to confront, but rather to protect the only heritage she has. He claims to have tax receipts and payments for services in his name, documents that he claims confirm his legitimate possession of the land. However, he fears that the violence will escalate.
