During the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP 30), Mexico presented its third Nationally Determined Contribution, the NDC 3.0, which sets for the first time an absolute goal of reducing greenhouse gases by 2035.
The new commitment, presented this morning in Belém do Pará, Brazil, by the Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources, Alicia Bárcena seeks to place people and nature at the center of decisionswith a more inclusive, fair and sustainable development model.
During his speech, Barcena warned that climate change “is no longer a warning, it is a reality that equals us as humanity,” after remembering that the recent devastating rains in Mexico They left more than one hundred thousand homes damaged, dozens of municipalities cut off, and eighty lives lost.
Thus, he called for this summit to be “the COP of truth and the COP of hope”, recognizing that global climate action is urgent and requires courage and effective cooperation between countries.
They present NDC 3.0 as a prevention measure
The official, Alicia Bárcena, presented NDC 3.0 as a roadmap to accelerate national decarbonization and move towards a low-emissions development model. It proposes comprehensive measures in sectors such as energy, transportation, industry, agriculture and waste management, with the goal of achieving net zero emissions by mid-century.
The country committed to a maximum of 364 to 404 million tons of CO2 equivalent on an unconditional basis, which implies “a reduction of more than 50% with respect to the trend scenario.”
