In northern Germany, a strike at Edeka threatens to significantly impact Christmas business. After three unsuccessful collective negotiations and the end of the peace obligation, the Verdi union has called on the employees of the central warehouse in Lüttow-Valluhn to go on strike. Negotiations between the Edeka Group and the union have stalled after the employer’s last wage offer was rejected as inadequate.
Verdi is calling for a wage increase of 200 euros per month for around 800 employees, which corresponds to an increase of around seven percent. The union considers the 2.1 percent increase offered by employers over two years, which corresponds to around 120 euros per month, to be inadequate. Thomas Ebeling, logistics union secretary and Verdi negotiator, criticizes the fact that Edeka Nord only wants to pay its employees inflation compensation.
The mood among the employees is tense because the collective bargaining committee unanimously rejected the offer. Ebeling emphasizes that it is up to the employer to resolve the conflict quickly by making a serious offer. A fourth trial date has not yet been agreed and the possibility of empty shelves at Christmas is a further concern.
In the past, difficult wage negotiations could often be resolved without strikes, but this time the employers are showing no movement. Ebeling describes the offer as “discount-like” and inappropriate for the industry leader Edeka. He demands that investments be made in the future of the workforce, as Edeka Nord generates billions in sales with its employees and invests in expanding its workplaces.
