The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has granted permission to the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC) to offer a new securities tokenization service. This decision marks a significant step towards the digitalization of the financial market by opening the possibility of converting real-world assets into digital tokens. The DTCC plans to offer this service through its subsidiary, the Depository Trust Company (DTC).
Tokenization will initially be applied to a selection of highly liquid assets, including the Russell 1000 Index, exchange-traded funds tracking major indices, and U.S. Treasury bonds. The service is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2026. This initiative could significantly improve the efficiency and accessibility of securities trading and create new opportunities for investors.
The SEC has issued a so-called “no-action” letter to the DTCC, confirming that the agency will not take any enforcement action as long as the proposed product performs as described. This type of letter is rare and underscores the SEC’s confidence in the DTCC’s plans. DTCC CEO Frank La Salla highlighted the potential benefits of tokenization, including collateral mobility, new trading modalities and 24/7 access to programmable assets.
The SEC’s decision comes at a time when regulators worldwide are trying to create clear guidelines for dealing with digital assets. Tokenization of securities could not only increase market efficiency but also increase transparency and security. Experts see tokenization as an important step towards modernizing financial markets, which could also make it easier to integrate blockchain technologies into existing systems.
