There is currently unrest at the VW Kassel plant in Baunatal as the future of almost 400 temporary employees is at stake. These employees, some of whom have been working at the location for six years, are expected to leave the company at the end of the year. IG Metall Nordhessen has confirmed that 290 of these employees plan to sue against the decision not to renew their contracts. Dennis Schindehütte from IG Metall emphasizes that the union provides legal protection to those affected, even if the success of the lawsuits cannot be guaranteed.
The VW board had previously stated that the decision not to extend the contracts was made as part of collective bargaining a year ago. This measure is part of an extensive negotiation package to increase the competitiveness of the locations and to avoid location closures and operational layoffs. However, IG Metall vehemently contradicts this representation and describes it as “absolute nonsense”. According to Schindehütte, there was no such agreement in the course of the collective bargaining agreement.
In parallel to the fixed-term contracts, the situation of temporary workers is also causing discussions. In the summer, around 700 contracts for temporary workers expired without any follow-up contracts being offered. Former temporary workers are surprised at job advertisements from personnel service providers looking for new workers for the VW plant in Baunatal. A spokesman for the plant management makes it clear that Volkswagen Kassel has not commissioned any personnel recruitment measures through external service providers.
IG Metall and the works council continue to demand the continued employment of the affected employees and are examining legal steps. The union emphasizes that VW management’s claims contribute to division among the workforce and further aggravate the situation. The coming months will show whether the employees’ legal steps will be successful and how the situation at the VW plant in Kassel will develop.
