Deutsche Post is faced with the challenge of making its branch network in Germany more efficient. Many communities lack traditional post offices, which has led the postal service to increasingly rely on automated stations. These machines have the advantage of being accessible 24 hours a day and allowing a variety of services such as sending and receiving packages and purchasing stamps.
A key aspect of this development is Deutsche Post’s legal obligation to operate a branch in all larger communities. This obligation can now also be fulfilled by automated stations, provided the Federal Network Agency approves this. Six such machines have already been approved in Hesse and are located in various cities such as Aßlar and Geisenheim.
The introduction of these machines is part of a larger trend towards automation in the postal sector. By the end of September, Deutsche Post had submitted 629 applications nationwide for the recognition of these machines as full branches, 72 of which had already been approved. In the long term, this development could lead to fewer and fewer branches having to be staffed.
Another advantage of the machines is the option of video advice, which is available to customers if they have any questions. This is particularly important in rural areas where structural change has led to the closure of many small businesses that previously provided postal services. Deutsche Post currently operates around 1,200 interim branches to meet legal requirements, but plans to replace these with ATMs.
Swiss Post promises to find solutions for locations not currently covered. A company spokesman explained that solutions are already in prospect for around half of the unoccupied locations. This could be done either through new branches or through additional post offices. The switch to vending machines could therefore be an important step in improving the efficiency and accessibility of postal services in Germany.
