SYRACUSE / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – There is a worrying trend in Onondaga County, New York: the number of people getting the flu shot has dropped dramatically. This could be due to increasing skepticism towards vaccines, which has increased since the Covid pandemic. Health Commissioner Dr. Kathryn Anderson warns about the potential consequences of this decline.

In Onondaga County, New York, the number of flu vaccinations has dropped significantly this year. Dr. Kathryn Anderson, the county’s health commissioner, expresses concern about this trend, which may be caused by growing vaccine skepticism. This skepticism has increased since the Covid pandemic and now also affects routine flu vaccinations.

Although there is no federal backlash against the flu shot, unlike the annual Covid boosters, only 27% of Onondaga County residents have received the flu shot so far. In previous years this figure was over 40% at this point, meaning a decline of around 60,000 people. A similar trend can be seen nationwide, with almost 4 million fewer vaccinations than in previous years.

Flu cases have increased in recent weeks, prompting the state health department to declare annual flu season. In the past three weeks, Upstate University Hospital’s emergency room has treated nearly 1,800 people with flu-like symptoms. Dr. Anderson stresses the importance of vaccination to prevent serious complications such as pneumonia, which kill thousands, especially older people, every year.

Vaccination rates have also fallen by 23% among older people, who typically have a higher vaccination rate. Despite the fact that some flu strains have mutated this year and could affect the effectiveness of the vaccine, the vaccination still provides some protection. Dr. Anderson emphasizes that vaccination can mean the difference between being sick at home for a few days and being hospitalized.
