BERLIN / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – The discussion about the import of liquid gas from Russia is heating up tempers in Germany. Jan van Aken from the Left calls for an immediate stop, while Michael Kretschmer from the CDU calls for a resumption of economic relations after the end of the war. These contrasting positions reflect tensions within German politics as the EU tightens its sanctions against Russia.

The debate about the import of liquid gas from Russia has reached a new level of intensity in Germany. Jan van Aken, leader of the Left Party, has called on the federal government to immediately stop the import of Russian liquid gas. He argues that revenue from these imports significantly fills Russia’s war coffers and thus supports the Kremlin’s military aggression against Ukraine.
Van Aken highlights that the company Sefe, formerly Gazprom Germania, continues to hold on to long-term contracts with Russia despite being nationalized after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These contracts ensure the supply of liquefied natural gas to the EU and help Russia continue to receive funding. Van Aken describes the discussion about ongoing deliveries as a “mendacious discussion” because it does not sufficiently take into account the moral and political implications of business with Russia.
In contrast, the Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer from the CDU advocates a resumption of economic relations with Russia after the end of hostilities in Ukraine. Kretschmer argues that long-term economic relationships could increase Germany’s security if they are designed without new dependencies. However, this position also meets with resistance within his own party.
The European Union has meanwhile decided not to allow liquefied gas imports from Russia from 2027. This step is part of a new sanctions package that further tightens sanctions against Russia. Despite the initial drastic cuts following the attack on Ukraine, security and price considerations have so far prevented European importers from completely halting Russian deliveries.
