Seven civilians were killed and 12 others were injured today, Sunday, in a drone attack on a hospital in the city of Dilling, which is besieged by the Rapid Support Forces in South Kordofan, southern Sudan.
Medical sources explained that among the injured were patients and their companions at the military hospital, which provides its services to civilians and military alike, according to what was reported by Agence France-Presse.
The Kordofan region is one of the hotspots of fighting, and it includes three states rich in oil, gold, and agricultural lands, and it forms a link between the areas under army control in the north, east, and center, and the Darfur region, which has been controlled by the Rapid Support Forces since the end of last October.
The incident comes a day after drone attacks targeted a base for the UN peacekeeping mission in Kadugli, leading to the killing of 6 Bangladeshi soldiers, and the army and the Rapid Support Forces exchanged accusations regarding responsibility for the attack.
The Sudanese government said that it condemns in the strongest terms “the air attack carried out by the rebel Rapid Support militia using a drone and targeting the United Nations headquarters in the city of Kadugli, in a grave violation of the established protection of UN facilities and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.”
A military source had told Al Jazeera that a force from the Sudanese army and the forces supporting it combed 3 of the fighting axes around the city of Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan state.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, strongly condemned the air attack that targeted a facility belonging to the international organization in Kadugli, which resulted in the killing of 6 peacekeepers and the injury of 8 others.
Guterres warned that the attack may amount to a “war crime” under international law, and called for those responsible for the “unprovoked attack” to be held accountable.

The Chairman of the Commission stressed that targeting peacekeeping forces is unacceptable and undermines regional and international peace and security. He called for those responsible for the attack to be identified and held accountable immediately, and called on all parties to the conflict to fully adhere to international law, especially ensuring the safety of peacekeeping forces.
