These unusual cases of skin cancer in relatively young people were linked by researchers to the intense UV radiation emitted by tanning beds. The study, published in the journal Science Advances, shows that 5.1% of tanning bed users developed melanoma, compared to just 2.1% of non-users. Even after accounting for other risk factors such as family history, the risk of melanoma among tanning bed users remained almost three times higher. What’s particularly alarming is that just ten applications of a tanning bed can be enough to double the lifetime risk of melanoma.
Given these alarming results, the study authors are calling for stricter regulations on tanning beds, especially for minors. Organizations such as the World Health Organization have already advised that people under the age of 18 should not have access to these devices. In some countries, tanning beds for minors are already banned. Researchers emphasize the need for better education about the dangers of tanning beds to protect the public from the potentially deadly consequences.
