LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – A new study shows tanning beds pose a significant risk of skin cancer. The research found that users of these devices not only have a higher risk of melanoma, but also have unusual mutations in areas of the body that are not normally exposed to the sun. These findings raise questions about the safety and regulation of tanning beds.

Using tanning beds, especially during the winter months, is a popular method for many people to maintain tanned skin. But a recent study by scientists at Northwestern University and the University of California, San Francisco warns of the significant health risks associated with these devices. The researchers found that users of tanning beds have a significantly higher risk of developing melanoma than people who do not use these devices.

Of particular concern is the discovery that tanning beds can lead to skin cancer in areas of the body not normally exposed to the sun, such as the buttocks and lower back. These unusual cases of skin cancer in relatively young people were linked by researchers to the intense UV radiation emitted by tanning beds. This radiation can occur all year round and on any part of the body, increasing the danger compared to natural sunlight.

The study, published in the journal Science Advances, shows that 5.1% of tanning bed users developed melanoma, compared to just 2.1% of non-users. Even after accounting for other risk factors such as family history, the risk of melanoma among tanning bed users remained almost three times higher. What’s particularly alarming is that just ten applications of a tanning bed can be enough to double the lifetime risk of melanoma.

Given these alarming results, the study authors are calling for stricter regulations on tanning beds, especially for minors. Organizations such as the World Health Organization have already advised that people under the age of 18 should not have access to these devices. In some countries, tanning beds for minors are already banned. Researchers emphasize the need for better education about the dangers of tanning beds to protect the public from the potentially deadly consequences.
