He National Weather Service (SMN) reported that cold front 18, interacting with a polar trough, the jet stream and an atmospheric river, will cause a notable drop in temperature and severe winter conditions between Wednesday and Sunday in much of the countryespecially in the northwest and north of Mexico.
States with the greatest impact due to extreme cold
During the early hours of Thursday to Monday, minimum temperatures of -10 to -5 °C and frost are expected in mountain areas of:
- Chihuahua
- Durango
- With values from -5 to 0 °C, also with frost, in mountains of:
- Baja California
- Sonora
- Zacatecas
- State of Mexico
- Tlaxcala
- Puebla
- Veracruz
- Oaxaca
Likewise, mountainous regions of Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Querétaro and Hidalgo will register temperatures of 0 to 5 °C.
Freezing rain, sleet and possible snowfall
From this Wednesday until Friday, the probability of freezing rain, sleet or snow remains in the mountains of:
- Sonora
- Chihuahua
- Durango
- Sinaloa
- Coahuila (starting Friday)
- Intense winds and high waves
- Gusts could reach 60 to 80 km/h in:
- Sonora
- Chihuahua
- Durango
And from 40 to 60 km/h in areas of the northeast, as well as in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec during Thursday morning.
On the western coast of the Baja California peninsula and the coasts of Sinaloa, Nayarit and Jalisco, waves of 1 to 2.5 meters are expected.
States with more intense rains
Between Wednesday and Friday, cold front 18 will leave heavy to very heavy rain in:
- Baja California Sur
- Sinaloa
- Durango
- Sonora
- Chihuahua
- Coahuila
For the weekend, heavy rain will move towards:
- Tamaulipas
- San Luis Potosi
- Queretaro
- Hidalgo
- Puebla
- Veracruz
- Oaxaca
- Chiapas
- Yucatan
- Quintana Roo
The SMN warned that these precipitations could generate flooding, landslides, flooding and flooding of rivers and streams.
Cold front 18 will remain stationary for several days over the north and east of the country. In combination with the entry of humidity from the Pacific, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, it will maintain rain and a cold to very cold environment in the northwest, north, northeast and high areas of the center of the Mexican territory.
