Mexico City.- Despite having promised during the campaign that there would be no increases in public transportation, the head of the capital’s government, Clara Brugadaauthorized a 25% increase in the service fee Route and Corridor concession. The measure was published on October 31, 2025 in a special edition of the Official Gazette, after a six-hour meeting between authorities and transporters.
Starting on Saturday, November 1, trips of up to 5 kilometers will cost 7.50 pesos, those of greater distance up to 9 pesos, and runners will go up to 9.50 pesos, with a 20% surcharge at night. The adjustment represents an increase of 1.50 pesos per trip, higher than the accumulated inflation since 2022, and comes after three years without fare changes.
During his campaign in May 2024, Brugada harshly criticized the opposition for proposing increases. He accused the PAN, PRI and PRD of having a “classist business plan” and declared: “We are not going to allow them to increase the price of the Metro or transportation for those who live further away.”
The capital government justified the adjustment as a result of work groups with dealersseeking to improve the quality of service without affecting the economy of users. Among the commitments assumed by carriers are carrying a valid type “C” license, removing tinted windows, having civil liability insurance, and keeping authorized rates visible.
Periodic inspection of lights, brakes and safety devices will also be required, as well as cleaning of units, use of uniform and participation in training programs.
The measure has generated criticism for the contrast between the campaign speech and government decisions, in a context where millions of capital residents depend on public transportation for their daily transportation.
