China recently lifted export restrictions on computer chips, which are crucial to automobile production. These chips are manufactured by Nexperia, a company based in the Netherlands but owned by China’s Wingtech. The Chinese government’s decision to ease export controls comes at a time when the European automotive industry has faced significant supply shortages.
The Dutch government took control of Nexperia in October to secure European supplies of semiconductors. This measure was taken to prevent the chips from becoming unavailable in an emergency. In response, China had blocked exports of the finished chips, leading to fears that it could cause global supply chain problems.
The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (EMEA) had warned that supplies of Nexperia chips would only last a few weeks if the Chinese export ban was not lifted. Companies such as Volvo Cars and Volkswagen had already warned of possible production stops, while Jaguar Land Rover highlighted the threat to its business.
China’s recent decision to simplify export procedures for Nexperia chips and grant exemptions from licensing requirements as long as the goods are intended for civilian use was welcomed by the EU. EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic emphasized the importance of a stable and predictable framework for the unhindered flow of semiconductors.
