China is about to launch the Shenzhou-21 mission, which will bring three taikonauts and, for the first time, four live mice to the Tiangong space station. The launch will take place from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China and is a significant step in China’s growing space program. This mission aims to advance scientific research in areas such as space bioscience and microgravity.

The crew of the Shenzhou-21 consists of Zhang Lu, Wu Fei and Zhang Hongzhang. Wu Fei, born in 1993, will be the youngest taikonaut ever sent into space by China. This mission provides a unique opportunity to study the effects of microgravity on mammalian behavior by carrying two male and two female mice on board.

China has intensified its space program since being excluded from the international space station project. Under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, the country aims to put taikonauts on the moon by 2030. The Shenzhou-21 mission is a further step towards these ambitious goals, which also include the establishment of a lunar base.

The mission is also seen as a platform for international cooperation as China plans to bring a Pakistani astronaut aboard the Tiangong station in the future. This initiative follows a cooperation agreement between China and Pakistan and shows China’s willingness to involve international partners in its space projects.
