BEIJING / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – China has surprisingly relaxed the export ban on important semiconductor metals such as gallium, germanium and antimony to the USA. This decision could defuse the trade conflict between the two superpowers and secure the US supply of these critical raw materials.

China recently made a significant decision affecting international trade in rare earth and semiconductor metals. The country has suspended the previously imposed ban on exports of the metals gallium, germanium and antimony to the USA. These metals are essential for the production of modern technologies and are almost exclusively sourced from China. The suspension of restrictions will last until November 27, 2026 and could ease relations between the world’s two largest economies.

China’s decision to lift the export ban comes at a time when US-China trade relations are strained. In 2024, China restricted exports of these metals in response to high tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. These tariffs had led to an escalation in the trade conflict, which may now be defused by the latest talks between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea.

The suspension of export restrictions is seen as a sign of de-escalation in the trade conflict. China dominates global rare earth mining, while the USA and Myanmar only control a small share. Easing export bans could help the US reduce its dependence on Chinese raw materials and increase security of supply for the semiconductor industry.

In addition to the metals gallium, germanium and antimony, China has also temporarily lifted export controls on other rare earths, lithium battery materials and superhard materials. These measures are valid until November 10, 2026 and could improve access to important raw materials for the US and other countries. China’s decision is seen as a strategic step to defuse the trade conflict and stabilize economic relations.
