Israeli company Attis Aviation, a startup specializing in unmanned aviation systems (UAS), is facing the challenge of securing funding as a small company in the UAV industry. Mark Koltun, co-founder and CEO of Attis Aviation, emphasizes the difficulty of finding investors who focus exclusively on UAVs. Despite the growing importance of drone technology in the defense industry, there are hardly any specialized investment funds for UAVs.
Since founding in 2021, Attis Aviation has raised approximately $1 million in funding and is now seeking seed investment to accelerate production and commercialization of its ROC VTOL UAS system. This system, named after the mythological bird Roc, is scheduled to be presented at the upcoming UVID Defense Tech Conference. It offers rapid deployment capability and is suitable for a variety of missions, from border surveillance to supporting firefighting operations.
Development of the ROC system began in early 2025, and in just eight months the company made its flagship system ready to fly. The vertical take-off, fixed-wing system can carry up to 40 kilograms and stay aloft for over 20 hours. This combination of vertical takeoff and long flight time is a technical achievement that few UAV systems in the world have achieved.
Recent geopolitical events, particularly the Hamas attacks on Israel and the resulting conflicts, have influenced Attis Aviation’s strategic direction. Originally focused on the civilian market, the company has shifted its priorities to the defense and homeland security markets. This realignment reflects a broader reassessment of defense technology, which is now viewed as critical infrastructure.
Although Israel’s unmanned aviation industry remains underfunded, Attis Aviation has already secured its first Israeli contract and is in advanced negotiations with potential customers in Europe, Asia and the US. Koltun is convinced that Israel will continue to play a leading role in the UAV sector and that Attis Aviation will contribute to this as a significant player.
