This Sunday, November 2, Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, Secretary of National Defense (Sedena)declared that Carlos Manzo Rodríguezhad permanent support and communication from Army and the National guardwith whom he held at least four formal meetings, between May and October, to review his security scheme and the progress of the operations deployed in the region.
Carlos Manzo Rodríguez, mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán, was murdered on the night of November 1. The mayor had federal and municipal protection since the end of 2024, which had been reinforced in May of this year, according to Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC). The head condemned the murder and assured that the Government of Mexico works in close coordination with the Michoacan authorities to find those responsible who, he said, took advantage of their vulnerability to carry out the attack.

For his part, Trevilla Trejo assured that “There was always direct, permanent and continuous communication with the mayor“. He stressed that, although in the first meetings the mayor requested more troops, in subsequent meetings, including the one on October 21, 10 days before the attack, only strategies and territorial adjustments were reviewed, without new requests for reinforcements.
Trevilla highlighted that, as part of the coordination with the municipality, the Army and the National Guard carried out joint operations such as “chupani” y “Champi“, with more than 1,200 troops deployedwhich led to dozens of arrests, seizures of weapons, drugs and vehicles, in addition to the dismantling of improvised explosive devices.
The authorities confirmed that one of the attackers was killed at the scene of the events and two more people were arrested, according to the Michoacán Prosecutor’s Office.
Carlos Manzo won the mayoralty of Uruapan in the 2024 electoral process, as an independent candidate and, after having served as a federal deputy in the 2021-2024 triennium, under the acronym of National Regeneration Movement (Morena)he stood out to start his independent political campaign with the slogan “the one with the hat“.
