Boeing recently partnered with startup Charm Industrial to remove up to 100,000 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere. Charm Industrial has developed an innovative method in which biomass from forestry is converted into so-called bio-oil, which is then permanently stored underground. This technology could play a crucial role in reducing emissions in the aviation industry, which is increasingly seeking sustainable solutions.
Charm Industrial’s method is based on the use of biomass resulting from forest maintenance, such as thinning forests to prevent forest fires. This biomass is heated to extremely high temperatures in special devices called pyrolysis plants to produce bio-oil. This bio-oil is then injected into underground reservoirs, including former oil wells. A byproduct of this process is biochar, which can help improve soil quality and further remove CO2.
