Avian influenza has spread dramatically in Lower Saxony in recent weeks, which has led to significant interventions in the region’s poultry industry. The districts of Vechta, Cloppenburg and Rotenburg, which are considered centers of poultry production in Germany, are particularly affected. The epidemic, caused by the highly contagious virus, has led to massive culling of poultry flocks to prevent further spread.
New cases were reported in several companies over the weekend. In the city of Vechta, a farm with around 38,000 laying hens was affected. The Friedrich Loeffler Institute confirmed the outbreak of avian influenza after examining a sample. The entire population was killed in an animal welfare manner. Similar measures were taken in a turkey farm in the municipality of Goldenstedt, where 9,800 animals were affected.
A new outbreak was also detected in a poultry farm with ducks, geese and turkeys in the Rotenburg district. The authorities reacted immediately and killed the affected animals in order to contain the disease. In the municipality of Tostedt in the Harburg district, a smaller geese farm with 80 animals was affected, which were also killed. These measures are part of a comprehensive plan to contain the disease.
The state government has set up containment and surveillance zones in the affected areas to control the spread of the disease. These zones are intended to prevent the virus from spreading to other stocks. In addition to posing a threat to animal health, avian influenza also has a significant economic impact on the region, which relies heavily on poultry production.
Experts warn that avian influenza could pose a persistent challenge in the coming months. Authorities are working closely with scientists to develop effective strategies to combat the disease. The situation requires continuous monitoring and adjustment of measures to protect animal health and minimize the economic consequences.
