Associations appeal to immigrants to participate in the general strike scheduled for the 11th of next month. Entities such as Solidariedade Imigrante and Casa do Brasil will support the initiative, convened by the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP) and the General Union of Workers (UGT).

“We will advance towards dignified work, for combating all types of violence and slavery, but also for defending the rights of immigrants“, highlights the statement from Solidariedade Imigrante. According to the association, immigrants and Portuguese need to be side by side. “We are all going to stop, It’s time to show the strength of immigrants alongside Portuguese workers“, he adds.

The appeal is for all immigrants to participate in the strike and not work that day. “The Immigrant Solidarity Association calls on all immigrant workers to stopjoining the general strike, fighting side by side with all workers”, he reinforces.

According to a recent study by Randstad, immigrants are the majority in some areas of activity in Portugal. This is the case of agriculture, hotels, cleaning and construction.

The mobilization is motivated by the labor package proposed by the Government. Among the main changes planned are the extension of the duration of fixed-term contracts, the return of the individual time bankthe end of the brake on external hiring after layoffs, the review of parental leave and the reinforcement of minimum mandatory services in the event of a strike. If the strike goes ahead, it will be the first general strike with the largest unions united since 2013.
