He Central Bank of Argentina tossed a coin to celebrate World Cup 2026 which includes a diagram of the second goal of Diego Maradona to England in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, although the presentation generated controversy on social networks on Wednesday.
On the obverse of the limited edition silver coin a ball is shown and on the reverse is illustrated the play in which Maradona started from his own field and left five rivals on the way to score what some classify as “the goal of the century” in the quarterfinals against England.
Minutes before, the ’10’ had scored a goal with his hand that remained in memory as “the hand of God“. Maradona was the exclusive figure of that World Cup that Argentina won.
Few units and adverse reactions of the commemorative coin
The Central Bank reported that they issued 2,500 units of the currency commemorative to be sold in the local market and that “in addition, they were minted gold coins of similar design that will be marketed internationally”
The presentation of the coin generated adverse reactions on social networks since the Central Bank post never mentions Maradona.

“Very nice proposal, but Why don’t they name the scorer of the goal?“, wrote a user on X. “The community manager was dribbling the surname Maradona like Diego to the English,” another joked.
The Central Bank reported that the currency is plata 925has a grooved edge, a weight of 27 grams and a diameter of 40 mm.
