Another feature has been added to the contact form online of the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA). This is the possibility of requesting a residence title for those who have completed high school in Portugal, college, master’s degree, doctorate or a research project. The announcement was made by the agency this Thursday, December 4th.
However, there are specific rules. According to AIMA, in the case of university students or researchers who “have completed their studies or research projects in Portugal”, the residence permit has a maximum period of one year to “look for a job or create a company in the national territory compatible with your qualifications”.
The agency’s statement also highlights that “except in exceptional cases, residence permits issued under cooperation agreements are not considered”. That is, agreements between universities that allow the mobility of students or researchers, as exist between Brazilian and Portuguese universities.
In the case of those who completed secondary education in the country (here called secondary education) There is no limitation on the period allowed for looking for a job or opening your own business. The same goes for those who have completed their undergraduate degree. (degree), master’s or doctorate in Portugal.
This new functionality will help students who graduated in Portugal and intend to stay in the country, but face difficulties in scheduling the exchange of the student title for a document covered by another article of the Foreigners Law.

To place an order on the portal, the following documents are required:
• Scanned copy of the passport;
• Scanned copy of the residence permit;
• Scanned copy of proof of completion of studies (secondary education or completion of higher education – 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles – and/or research project);
• Scanned copy of the employment or service provision contract and declaration of opening independent activity with the Tax Authority (Finance);
• Declaration by the applicant that they intend to take advantage of a maximum period of one year to look for work in Portugal, compatible with their qualifications;
• Proof of Social Security registration (NISS).
The agency points out that “all forms submitted that do not fall within the scope of this subject will be automatically disregarded”. This is the third new addition to the contact form in about two weeks.
At the end of November, the site started accepting appointment requests for family members of Europeans and for immigrants who have six-digit cards. AIMA’s objective is to increasingly digitize services.
