LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – The rapid increase in AI data centers could have a significant impact on other infrastructure projects. While state and local governments are investing record amounts to expand roads and bridges, the private sector is competing for the same resources by investing billions in data centers. Experts warn that this competition could delay the completion of important infrastructure projects.

The increasing demand for AI data centers poses a significant challenge to existing infrastructure projects. As state and local governments invest record amounts to expand roads, bridges and other public facilities, private investment in data center construction is also increasing rapidly. This development could lead to important infrastructure projects stalling due to a lack of resources.

In 2025, state and local governments reportedly sold a record amount of debt to finance infrastructure projects for the second consecutive year. Strategists predict another $600 billion in sales next year. These funds are crucial for expanding and modernizing public infrastructure, but competition from the private sector could significantly delay the implementation of these projects.

According to the Census Bureau, private investment in data center construction is at an annual rate of over $41 billion. This amount is roughly equivalent to what state and local governments spend on building transportation infrastructure. These parallel investments create competition for construction workers, which is exacerbated by the labor shortage in the industry.

Andrew Anagnost, CEO of architecture and design software maker Autodesk, told industry experts that building data centers undoubtedly diverts resources from other projects. He is convinced that many infrastructure projects will not progress as quickly as those responsible would like. This assessment highlights the need to carefully consider priorities in resource allocation to ensure that both public and private construction projects can be successfully implemented.
