The Honolua Classic, an exclusive surfing event taking place on the scenic Honolua Bay on December 6th and 7th, is not only attracting first responders and military personnel this year, but is also opening its doors to educators for the first time. This expansion of the field of participants underscores the importance of those who contribute to the safety and education of the community every day.
The event is organized by Outrigger Kāʻanapali Beach Resort and the Kahākūkahi Ocean Academy. Participants compete in 50-minute heats, with each group consisting of marine rescue specialists, coast guard specialists, paramedics, military personnel and teachers. The public is invited to watch the competitions and cheer on the participants. Sponsors such as Maui Brewing Company and Duke’s ensure the physical well-being.
Zane Schweitzer, a Lahaina native and world champion aquatic athlete and co-founder of the Kahākūkahi Ocean Academy, emphasizes the importance of the event: “By expanding participation to educators, we recognize all those who shape our community every day.” The Honolua Classic was created in 2024 to thank local heroes and give back to the community. All proceeds benefit the Lahaina Junior Lifeguard Program and Kahākūkahi Ocean Academy’s free youth mentoring programs.
Edwin Torres, general manager of Outrigger Kāʻanapali Beach Resort, sees the event as an opportunity to deepen the partnership with Kahākūkahi Ocean Academy and expand its impact on the community. “These participants don’t just respond to emergencies or serve our community. They teach our children, protect our coasts and build our future. The Honolua Bay event is our thank you to them.”
The event takes place at one of Hawaii’s most iconic surf spots and aims to directly support Maui’s youth. Given limited parking, carpooling is recommended and all drivers must present a work ID to access the event.
