The Kia Sportage has established itself as a fixture in the C-SUV segment in Europe, especially in Germany. Since the fifth generation was launched on the market in January 2022, the model has found over 50,000 buyers. But in a fiercely competitive market dominated by models like the VW Tiguan, Hyundai Tucson and the up-and-coming Dacia Bigster, the Sportage has to hold its own. A comprehensive facelift has given the model a modern design, but the diesel engine remains unchanged.
The 1.6-liter CRDi diesel with 136 hp and 320 Nm of torque seems a little tired compared to the more powerful hybrid variants of the Sportage. While the hybrids have up to 288 hp, the diesel drive falls short of expectations in terms of performance and efficiency. The diesel is particularly noticeable on the highway with loud noises and vibrations, which impair driving comfort.
The test consumption of 6.3 liters per 100 kilometers is not impressive compared to other models, such as the BMW X1, which consumes less with a more powerful diesel. The low demand for the diesel engine is also reflected in the sales figures, as only a small percentage of buyers choose this variant. The market is increasingly trending towards more efficient and quieter drive alternatives.
In the interior, the Sportage impresses with a solid impression of quality and generous space. The equipment of the GT-Line version is almost complete and offers numerous comfort and safety features. Nevertheless, the diesel drive remains a weak point that spoils the overall impression. If you are looking for a modern and efficient SUV, you should consider the hybrid variants, which are not only more powerful but also quieter and more economical.
