Eric Zelikman, a former researcher at xAI, has set himself an ambitious goal: He wants to equip artificial intelligence (AI) with emotional intelligence to solve complex human problems. After leaving xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company, Zelikman is now focusing on his doctorate at Stanford University and the development of his startup Humans&. This company aims to produce AI models that are able to learn from their users and empathize with their perspectives.

Zelikman’s approach contrasts with the views of many other AI researchers. While some experts, such as Microsoft’s AI boss Mustafa Suleyman, warn about the risks of systems that are too empathetic, Zelikman sees great potential in the emotional intelligence of AI. He believes that human-centered models could be able to achieve goals that previously seemed unattainable, such as curing cancer. These models could better work with large groups of people and understand their goals, ambitions and values.

Zelikman’s vision is generating interest in the venture capital industry. Investors are ready to invest billions of dollars in AI startups led by renowned researchers. The company value of Humans& is currently estimated at around four billion dollars. Zelikman himself is known as a promising mind, particularly through his study describing how language models can learn to “think” before responding.

However, there are also concerns about developing AI with high emotional intelligence. Studies show that intensive use of chatbots can lead to loneliness and depressive symptoms. There is also a risk that people will perceive AI systems as sentient beings and place too much trust in them. It remains to be seen whether the positive effects Zelikman hoped for will materialize. Nevertheless, the development of empathetic AI models could represent a significant step in AI research.
