With its ambitious ‘HyPowerDrive’ project, BMW has set itself the goal of advancing hydrogen technology in the automotive sector. With state funding of 273 million euros, provided by the federal government and the state of Bavaria, the development of a fuel cell electric drive train is to be realized by 2028. This investment underlines the importance of hydrogen as a pioneering technology in the transport sector.

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder and Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder presented the funding decision personally in Berlin. Söder emphasized the need not to give up on cars and to promote the diversity of drive technologies. The federal government provides the majority of the funding with 191 million euros, while Bavaria contributes 82 million euros.

BMW plans to offer the popular X5 with five different powertrain options, including a hydrogen fuel cell. This diversification is intended to meet the different requirements of global markets. Söder also spoke out against a strict ban on combustion engines in the EU from 2035 in order to maintain technological openness.

At the same time, Bavaria’s Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger is calling for the development of a comprehensive hydrogen filling station infrastructure. This is crucial for the success of the new drive technology. The funding and the associated developments could establish Germany as a leading location for innovative drive technologies and strengthen the competitiveness of the German automotive industry.
