The Tunisian authorities warned of the danger of family disintegration in the country due to the high divorce rate, and stated that protecting the family is a top priority for them.
This came in a speech by the Minister of Family, Women, Children, and the Elderly, Asma Jabri, during the presentation of the ministry’s budget – Tuesday – according to a statement by the Assembly of People’s Representatives.
Jabri said, “Protecting the family is a top priority, especially in light of the increasing indicators of family disintegration as a result of divorce… The family is the basic cell of society and the state is committed to protecting it in accordance with the provisions of the constitution.”
Jabri pointed out that the Tunisian family “is witnessing profound transformations, most notably the rise in divorce rates, the increasing manifestations of domestic and digital violence, the decline in the proportion of children under 5 years old, in addition to the aging index reaching high levels.”
She explained that the Ministry “is working to strengthen family ties and develop family counseling and guidance services, in addition to supporting the national program for preparing for marital life.”
Jabri also pointed out that “the preparation of draft laws has begun to limit divorce and support family reconciliation in a way that ensures a ‘successful divorce’ that reduces the negative repercussions on children.”
According to statistics published by the National Institute of Statistics (governmental) in December 2024, divorce cases in Tunisia reached 14,000 cases annually.
