In 2024, Portugal had a rate of 9.2% of workers at risk of poverty, ranking ninth among Member States and one percentage point above the European Union average (EU 8.2%), Eurostat reports today.
Among EU countries, the highest rate of people over 18 working and at risk of poverty was 13.4% in Luxembourg, followed by Bulgaria (11.8%) and Spain (11.2%).
On the other hand, the lowest rates were recorded in Finland (2.8%), the Czech Republic (3.6%) and Belgium (4.3%).
The phenomenon affects more men than women in the EU (9.0% versus 7.3%) and in 22 Member States, including Portugal (11.4% and 8.8%, respectively).
In Germany, rates were equal for men and women, while in the Czech Republic, Latvia, Cyprus and Luxembourg rates were higher for women than for men.
The at-risk-of-poverty rate is the proportion of people with an equivalent disposable income below the at-risk-of-poverty threshold, which is set at 60% of the national median equivalent disposable income after social transfers.
