They had already left the country, alerted, it seems, by Patel’s tweet.
But that’s just the first part of this last one performance. The second occurred a couple of days later, when Patel decided to use the FBI plane to attend a wrestling event in Pennsylvania where his girlfriend was going to perform; a young 27-year-old singer named Alexis Wilkins. “It’s pathetic,” commented an old agency agent named Kyle Seraphin before arguing that these types of trips are also paid for by the taxpayer.
Not content with that, after the wrestling match and a brief stop in Nashville, where Wilkins resides, the FBI director traveled – again on the agency plane – to Texas to participate in a hunt that lasted, according to flight logs, three days.
When asked about all of the above, Patel simply explained that the criticism received comes from “people full of hate who are only looking for clicks.” An allusion to Wall Street Journalevidently, which he has also called “sensational trash.” Patel then wanted to make it known through a statement that the FBI is breaking historical records in the fight against violent crimes and drug trafficking.
Be that as it may, the truth is that in the Department of Justice They don’t seem to be very happy with Patel’s career since he took over as head of the FBI eight months ago. An FBI spokesperson contacted by the press for comment limited himself to saying that since taking office, Patel has only made “a dozen” personal trips on the aforementioned plane. One of them would have been the one he made to Scotland in August with Wilkins. There are also seven to Nashville and nine to Las Vegas; where Patel resided before moving to Washington.
It is worth remembering, at this point, that the current director of the FBI publicly criticized his predecessor, Chris Wrayfor using the agency’s plane during a vacation in the Adirondack Mountains, located in upstate New York, near the border with Canada. “Hey, Chris Wray, you don’t need a government plane to go on vacation to the Adirondacks,” Patel snapped in September 2023 during a podcast appearance.
All in all, and despite the frustration shown by both the Justice Department and the White House staff, it seems that Patel still maintains Trump’s support. “I am very proud of the work the FBI is doing under Director Patel’s leadership,” said her spokesperson. Caroline Leavitta few days ago adding that the president considers Patel a key piece in his public security team.
This support may have to do with the good personal relationship that both have maintained since 2018, when Patel – a lawyer by training – helped in the legal defense of a Trump advisor. And Patel’s public presentation last month in the Oval Office, where he attributed the FBI’s latest successes to Trump himself, is likely to help iron out the rough edges that arise every time he goes too far.
