Larry Summers resigns as director of OpenAI after the publication of his emails with Jeffrey Epstein

This announcement is known only two days after Summers decided to resign from all his public positions and commitments after the United States House of Representatives published a new series of emails last week that show the closeness between the two.

“Larry has decided to resign from the board of OpenAI and We respect your decision“remarked the governing body of the technology company in a statement sent this Wednesday to several American media outlets.

For his part, Summers has confirmed in another statement collected by EFE that, in line with his announcement to withdraw from his “public commitments”, he has also decided to “resign from the board of directors of OpenAI.”

“I appreciate the opportunity to have served, I am excited about the company’s potential and look forward to following its progress“, he added.

The former Secretary of the Treasury in the United States joined OpenAI board amid governance crisis that occurred in the company in November 2023 with the dismissal and subsequent reinstatement of its CEO, Sam Altman.

In recent days, a House committee released years of email exchanges between Epstein and Summers. Among them was one in which Summers appeared to be seeking advice about a relationship with a woman.

On the other hand, the American media have also published that Harvard University is investigating the relationship between its former president and Epstein.

Furthermore, the chain CNN reported this Wednesday that, as revealed by a Harvard spokesperson to the student newspaper The Crimsonthe investigation also includes Summers’ wife, professor emeritus of American literature at the University, and nearly a dozen current and former members of the institution.
